Turn Your Awareness Into Action!

What can you do?
  • Educate yourself and others about accepting and respecting people that are different from you. Go to forums and meetings that are held by your local LGBTQ+ community that will inform with and give positive perspectives about the Pride Community.
  • Mentor a local LGBTQ+ youth group that will help them develop into well rounded young adults. In Virginia Beach that group will be "You" and your contact is Nicole Pixler (757-818-4901)
  • The City of Virginia Beach is proud to work with the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission (HRC) to identify and eliminate discrimination. Collaboration between the HRC and the LGBTQ Liaison to the City Manager are essential to making sure that city policies and services are inclusive of the LGBT community.
  • The City of Virginia Beach provides several programs and services to the LGBT community, and we insist on having policies that are inclusive, welcoming, and ensure the safety of those involved in those services. As such, we provide services to LGBT Youth, Homeless, and elders in the community.
  • Unfortunately, intolerance and marginalization can still create barriers to equality and opportunity for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families, but the City remains committed to fostering positive change. For help with local issues please contact Anna M. Elias-Perez, LGBTQ+ Liaison to the City Manager, 757-385-1199, [email protected].
  • If you know of someone that needs immediate help, contact the LGBT national help center at lgbthotline.org/contact.

Why this topic in 2024?

A call went out to the community for proposals for Aware '24, and our executive director was interested in bringing awareness about the LGBTQ+ community in the Hampton Roads area. Nicole Pixler from Stand Up for Kids was contacted and our Pride Exhibit "With an Open Heart was born. Nicole runs a youth organization called YOU in Virginia Beach which focuses on 13-to-18-year-olds that are just discovering who they are. The group helps and fosters positive affirming meetings where teenagers and young adults can express themselves and discover who they are through forums with LGBTQ+ community leaders, art and other activities that reenforce a positive outlook on life.

Nicole is co-chairing this year's 4th annual Aware exhibit with Vinnie Bumatay, gallery manager of the Artists Gallery in Virginia Beach and Jorge A. Saenz, Exhibition Coordinator/Curator for Virginia Beach Art Center. Together they are bringing awareness about the Pride Community by promoting this year's exhibit that will consist of a month-long statewide exhibit supported with weekly forums that will highlight an assortment of topics.

The first step is to be an advocate for equality, respect, inclusivity of all peoples living in Virginia and beyond that are part of the Pride Community
