August Featured Artist
After a long career as an attorney, Valerie started painting and taking art classes at the MOCA with Suzanne Stevens and Marlowe Emerson as well as workshops with Joe DiGiulio, Jorge Saenz, Ken Wright, and at Art of the Carolinas. She set up a home studio and developed a love for acrylic painting and mixed media work. Valerie has established a lengthy affiliation with the Virginia Beach Art Center participating in many juried shows and joining as a Resident Artist in 2023.
Valerie works in acrylics on canvas, paper or wood panel and also creates mixed media pieces using found and handmade papers and materials. Her love of color often appears in bright abstracts, florals, cityscapes, landscapes, and figure paintings. Valerie's style is generally loose and suggestive rather than precise and specific. She builds pieces over time, following her intuition, and changing them as earlier layers inform the process.
Valerie has received several awards for her work, most notably Best in Show at the 2022 Fabulous Forgeries show for "Large Reclining Nude: Body Image Edition." Her piece "Diversity" was selected by the NEON Public Arts Committee for outdoor display in 2021. And her work was selected for a duo show entitled "Opposites Attract" at the Chesapeake Cuffee Public Library where over 20 pieces were on display. Valerie regularly participates in the annual Norfolk Academy Art Show and has shown work at Sentara Brock Center, ArtWorks of Richmond, The Chesapeake Rotary Art Show, The Creative Well, Norfolk Collegiate Auction, Miller Foundation Auction, and North End Arts & Crafts Show.
