CREATIVITY A HEALING POWER
Community Art Installation
The 4th annual Aware Exhibit is focused on mental health awareness during the month of October.
Creativity is a pathway that enhances and optimizes the power of healing when dealing with mental health. It is proven that creative arts can help individuals feel more balanced and resilient to circumstances in life.
The arts can heal, whether it be dancing, writing, painting or visual art.
This year we once again invite the community to participate by contributing to the community art installation.

Creative expression of happiness, anger, hope, love, thoughts, feelings and desire provides a forward movement in the progression of life.

THE PATH TO HEALING BEGINS WITH YOU!
How to participate:
|
We are calling for "self-portraits" to create a large installation. You can be realistic or abstract.
Use a 6 x 6 inch square to depict yourself at this moment in time. Use visual art to express how you feel, what you are thinking, how you look, what you love—this moment in time, whatever it may be. Directions:
There is an art-making station at the Art Center if you wish to use one of the pre-cut squares we are providing. We hope to have 600+ squares to assemble into a large art installation for the October exhibition. |

Turn Your Awareness Into Action!
What can you do?
- Educate yourself and others about mental health and how it affects loved ones and friends.
- Contribute to organizations in the area such as NAMI -National Alliance on Mental Health.
Why this topic in 2025?
A call went out to the community for proposals for Aware '25, and a proposal that focuses on the healing power of creativity was accepted. The lead artists, Susan Owens and Michele Barnes are co-chairing this year's community art installation. Partners for Aware include the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), Tidewater Arts Outreach (TAO) and Virginia Beach Libraries.
The first step is to be an advocate for mental health. By contributing to this community project you can help others help themselves through the visual arts.
